Eating Vegan in NYC

Part of being so thrilled for my move to New York City in August was definitely the abundance of food options there would be on offer. I was able to be vegan in Ohio, but it wasn’t so easy to eat out. My favorite vegan restaurant was over a half-hour away—but now it seems like I can’t get enough of restaurants with good vegan options!

I decided to discuss some of my favorite vegan spots in New York, including price information (how much a typical meal costs), favorite menu choices, and more.

by CHLOE ($10-$20)
There are by CHLOEs all over New York City, from SoHo to Rockefeller Center. They’re some of the most well-known vegan spots in NYC.

Two of my favorite choices are the Caesar salad and the mac n’ cheese, but there is so much more to offer. One great thing I love about by CHLOE is how many of my non-vegan friends and family enjoy it as well. I took my mom there, and she loved it just as much as I do.

Champs Diner ($15-$30)
This is in Brooklyn, which is a great area to check out, even though it’s a bit of a hike from the residence hall. One of the best options there is pancakes. They are gigantic, and there are so many different types to try, from “bananarama” to “cinnamon swirl.”

However, there are other options like sandwiches and salads. They also have some great appetizers, such as the mozzarella sticks and the mac n’ cheese, but the price does add up quickly.

Café Viva ($12-$30)
To start off, the price range expands this high depending on whether you order a couple slices … or a whole pizza. If you do decide to order a whole pizza, it may be a hefty price, but a large is 18 inches and you’ll have leftovers for days.

That said, I think this is one of the best pizza spots in New York. I love this place also because there’s regular cheese too, along with vegan cheese, in case your dairy-loving friend wants to come along. There are so many different choices to try. My mom and I split the La Nonna Di Martino, which is pictured.

Blockheads ($10-$15)
The two best things about this place are the $10 lunch special for a meal and beverage and the fact that it’s less than a ten-minute walk from Maxwell.

Blockheads isn’t exclusively vegan and has some great Mexican food for everyone. I recently got the vegan quesadilla, which was delicious. I will definitely be going back soon on one of my lunch breaks.

There are so many more great places to try with vegan options, but these four are definitely among my favorites. Whether you’re vegan or not, be sure to check them out.
