At-Home Fitness Guide

I personally love fitness and know a decent amount about workouts, although I am not an expert at fitness at all. I am the type of person that says, "I need to start going to the gym," but then I never go to the gym. I think numerous people have the same feeling that they want to exercise but do not have the time and energy. Now with stay-at-home, I have all this time on my hands, so I figured this was a perfect time to start exercising. Currently, I am exercising three days a week, and I am loving it. (Although, one form of exercise I will never do is going for a run.)

Basic concepts one should know about exercising:

  1. Do not exercise every day to start out. Your body needs rest after physical activity. Take breaks during workouts if you feel like you need them.

  2. You do not need machines or even weights to exercise! You can use your own body weight. You can buy a resistance band to use for basic resistance training.

  3. It is not about "how many" repetitions you can do or "how fast" you can do them. It is about having controlled movements, so you have proper form.

  4. Always have a warmup and cool down.

  5. Do the type of exercise that makes you happy and you will be more likely to do it.

What have I been doing?

For the past three weeks, I have been exercising Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning for an hour. I find exercising on this schedule is great because my body has time to rest, but it is a consistent amount of time between each workout. Each time, I do a full-body workout, though I tend to focus on my lower half. I have bad knees and strengthening those muscles is key for me, so I try my best to do exercise that will strengthen my quads and glutes.

On Monday and Friday, I do my own workout that I developed to target the areas of my body I want to focus on. I use a resistance band to make the exercise more muscle-building. Then on Wednesdays, I do the HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts through LIM and have loved them. I highly recommend the HIIT workouts that will be happening through August at least. You can find the classes through Student Life or on Instagram at 12 p.m. every day @WRKNYC holds live workouts.

Where do I find workout ideas?

I find these on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok because right now many influencers are posting their workouts.

You can even Google workouts based on what you want to work on or the type of exercise you are looking for!
