BRAG Hosts Self-Care Event For Black History Month
“It is Black History Month, however, blacks should be celebrated every day,” said the host of the host of the LIM event I virtually attended, Ja’Kierelle.
In honor of Black History Month, LIM’s B.R.A.G. chapter hosted a “self-care” event featuring two black-owned small businesses. If the pandemic had one positive effect, it’s that it has encouraged communities and their members to shop small. And with the recent BLM movements, it is more important than ever that we support black-owned businesses.
The B.R.A.G. event featured two special guests, Phyillicia Bishop, owner of Phils Better and Stacie Elpheage, owner of Rebellious Magnolia. Both women have launched their small businesses within the last year.
Phils Better is a hair and skincare company that uses all-natural ingredients to moisturize and restore hair and skin. Phyillicia’s product line features everything from body butter to hair oils and body scrubs.
Rebellious Magnolia is a soap company that features a lot of healing oils for all skin types. Stacie felt that certain scents and healing ingredients had helped her copy with a traumatic personal experience, so she incorporated those into her company’s soaps, in hope of helping others, too.
Though the event highlighted these self-care businesses, it was not about advertising. The discussion that took place at the event was inspiring. From the moment it started, the environment was warm and inviting. The group opened the floor to address why self-care is important, not just for the black community but all of society.
The conversation also consisted of ways to relieve stress and amplify the beauty that is already within you. After attending as a white woman, I feel inspired to support and research more black-owned businesses. In honor of Black History Month, I encourage you to explore shopping with black-owned small businesses, too.
