LIM Student Day-in-the-Life: Remote Edition

By now, we LIM students are settling into our routine of online learning. As much as I’ve adjusted, it’s still so much different than my regular school routine. However, there are many things I can do to make it feel as normal as possible!

Today, I’m going to go over a day-in-the-life of my remote experience. I decided to choose a Wednesday to track my activities. This is one of my busiest days, but I still find some time to relax and enjoy the day. I'm currently home in Columbus, Ohio. It's a much different setting than New York City, but I've been able to adapt.

11 a.m.

My day started right around 11:15 a.m. This is the first major difference from my in-person routine. Normally on a Wednesday, I'd be up around 9 or 10 a.m. Since we've switched to online, I just try to sleep in as much as I can!

My first Zoom class was at 11:30, and I find that 15 minutes is just enough time for me to wake up and ready myself to tune in. My class time ran for about thirty minutes, as we were just recapping our assignment and asking any questions we might have.

12 p.m.

As soon as class ended, I went downstairs to fix some brunch. I’ve found it works best for my remote routine to eat as soon as I finish class. This gives me a chance to relax as I scroll through Instagram, watch TV, or participate in another hobby such as reading or writing before getting back to work.

1 p.m.

Once I was finished with that, I spent about an hour on my internship work. I’m fortunate to have been able to continue with my internship even working remotely. Personally, it’s the work I enjoy doing the most, so it’s a great way for me to get focused.

3 p.m.

Next up, we had my internship class coursework. I had a journal and discussion board to complete. This is pretty easy, and since I was just working on my internship, it seemed fitting for this to be done next.

6 p.m.

I took quite a long break—and actually dozed off for a bit—before working on other assignments. I’ve found that while working remotely, I work best during the first part of my day, and then again in the evening.

Some things I’ve chosen to do during my breaks are the hobbies I mentioned before. One of my favorite activities in warmer weather is reading outside. I’ve tried to fit it into my daily routine as much as possible; unfortunately, there have been some rainy days lately. However, on the sunny days, I’ve found a great way to spend my time is just spending 30-45 minutes sitting in the sun and soaking up the Vitamin D. Other than reading outside, just going for a walk around my neighborhood has been a great way to spend time as well.

Another hobby I’ve recently gotten back into is writing, specifically poetry. I take a poetry course, but I used to also write a lot of poems back in high school. I’ve spent time lately gathering up old poems and composing them into a book. It’s been awesome being able to get back in touch with my creative side.

7 p.m.

After dinner, I dove right back into work. I worked for quite a while on some of my other internship work, as I said before, it’s doable remotely and I truly enjoy it. Once I finished that, I worked on a journal for my Introduction to Film course.

10 p.m.

By 10 p.m., I was ready to turn in for the night. I ended my night off by watching The Vampire Diaries virtually with a close friend. Like I mentioned at the beginning, I’ve tried to make things feel as normal as possible. When the two of us were back at the residence hall, one of our favorite ways to spend time together was to binge a good show. A way that’s allowed us to continue this is by the chrome extension called Netflix Party. This application allows the show to be synced up for both of us and even has a live chat feature. It may not be quite the same, but it’ll do for now!

By midnight, I was exhausted and headed to bed. I would need all the rest I could get for a full day of work Thursday.
